Red Sea Urchin (strongylocentrotus franciscanus) – Zeballos, Vancouver Island
The red sea urchin ranges in colour from red to dark burgundy and even purple. They can be found from Alaska to California as well as Russia and Japan in rocky, shallow areas. The mouth, which contains five teeth, is located on the bottom of the body. Diet consists mainly of seaweed and algae. Long spines grow on a shell called a “test”, and sea urchins have the ability to regenerate lost spines.
