Description
Common Garter Snake (thamnphis sirtalis) – Parksville, Vancouver Island
Found throughout North America, the common garter snake is active on warm days, but hibernates in underground dens during the winter. They mainly eat slugs, worms, amphibians and insects, although they will also eat rodents, small birds and fish. When threatened, garter snakes secrete a foul smelling fluid from a gland at the base of their tail.
